The name vegan leather does not tell you which resin, fabric, coating or adhesive was used. When choosing a material, look at the actual composition, and check each environmental claim and durability claim against evidence.
Find out what each layer is made of
Ask the supplier what the resin, the backing fabric, the coating and the adhesive layer are made of. Check whether anything backs up the claim about animal-derived content, and how much of the material that document actually covers.
Vegan says nothing about footprint or performance
Whether it is environmentally preferable, biodegradable or recyclable, and how long it lasts, are separate questions. A vegan claim does not guarantee any of them. Check which product the evidence covers, and under what conditions.
Cross-check the code, the scope and who issued it
- Compare the code of the material under review with the code on the document.
- Check whether the document covers the whole material or only some components.
- Look at who issued the certificate or test report, what it covers, and whether it is still valid.
- Check that it suits the conditions the finished product is used in and the processing it goes through.
Whether a particular product is certified has to be confirmed against that product's documents. This list is not a certificate, nor does it say that everything REGEN handles is certified.
